Spreading Joy for Heart Health

On Monday 18 June 2018 In2hula is going to have a day of Spreading Joy for Heart Health to launch the official Super Heart Hoop-Off website.   We will be spreading the message that fun activity is an effective way to help maintain a healthy heart.

In the morning we will be having some hoop fun with two classes from Banks Avenue School where the Heart Foundation mascot, Hearty, will also make an appearance.

At 12:15pm in City Mall, Christchurch, outside H & M, we are going to perform a hula hoop flash mob to entertain passers-by.  We will follow the hoop flash mob performance with a mini-hoop jam where anyone will be able to join in and have a go at hooping for a healthy heart.

In the afternoon we will be taking the hoop love to Maples Retirement Village along with windmills from Kindercare, and some bubble fun to help them rediscover childhood joy.

Below is a video of the easy hoop routine that we will be performing for the Hoop Flash Mob.  We would love for you to learn it and join in with us!

Please note, we had just put together the routine when we made the video, so Bernadette a couple of ‘moments’ as she is performing it. However, this also demonstrates that this is okay, and all you need to do is pick the hoop back up, and join in again when you can.

The aim of this flash mob is fun and participation, not perfection.

If you feel like it would be too much to learn this routine then you are welcome to come along on the day and just waist hoop.

Here is the breakdown of the moves in the routine which we will repeat 3 and a bit times, and then end with a pose:

Escalator start

passing the hoop vertically under alternating legs – 8 leg raises

handhoop/vertical lasso for 6 counts/beats, then grab the hoop when the inside of the hoop is in front of your body and the hoop circles out to the side, then swing the hoop round vertically in front of you and raise it above your head

coinspin – 8 counts/beats

isolation spin down – 8 counts/beats waist hoop – 8 counts/beats

hoop up into halo – 8 counts/beats

pass around – 8 counts/beats

weave – 8 weaves in one hand then 8 weaves in other hand

The music we will use is Heroes by Alesso

We would love for you to join us – you can do it! Let’s have some hoop fun!

You can post videos of your progress with learning the routine on the 10 Minute Club Facebook page.

We will have a short group practice at the Hallswell Community Hall, 450 Halswell Road, at 10:45am on Saturday 16 June.
